The ECHR judgment of October 29, 2019 in the case “Bychkov v. The Russian Federation” (application No. 48741/11).
In 2011, the applicant was assisted in preparing the application. Subsequently, the application was communicated to the Russian Federation.
In the case, the application was successfully examined regarding the initiation of a defamation case against the applicant, which entailed a violation of his right to freedom of expression. The case has violated the requirements of Article 10 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
In his application, the applicant complained that the institution of defamation proceedings against him violated his right to freedom of expression.
On 29 October 2019, in an application lodged by the applicant, the Court unanimously ruled that in the present case the Russian authorities violated the requirements of Article 10 of the Convention (the right to freedom of expression) and ordered the respondent Government to pay the applicant 5,200 euros in compensation moral harm.
