ECHR Decision of July 2, 2019 in the case of Novaya Gazeta and Milashina (Novaya Gazeta and Milashina) v. Russia "(application No. 4097/06).
The case has successfully examined the application that the court decisions unreasonably limited the applicants' right to freedom of expression. The case contained a violation of Article 10 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
In 2006, the applicants were assisted in preparing the application. Subsequently, the application was communicated to the Russian Federation.
In their application, the applicants complained that the decisions of the courts unreasonably restricted their right to freedom of expression.
On July 2, 2019, on an application filed by the applicants, the Court unanimously ruled that in the present case the Government violated the requirements of Article 10 of the Convention (right to freedom of expression) and ordered the respondent Government to pay the applicants 1,160 euros in respect of pecuniary damage, 3 250 and 6 000 euros to the applicant company and the applicant respectively in respect of pecuniary damage.
