The ECHR judgment of July 2, 2019 in the case of Popov v. Russia (application No. 25082/06).

The case successfully examined the application that the applicant had been ill-treated in order to obtain a confession from him and that the investigation into this circumstance was ineffective. The case contained a violation of Article 3 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

In 2006, the applicant was assisted in preparing the application. Subsequently, the application was communicated to the Russian Federation.

In his application, the applicant complained that he had been ill-treated in order to obtain a confession from him and that the investigation into this circumstance was ineffective.

On July 2, 2019, on a application filed by the applicant, the European Court unanimously ruled that in the present case the Government violated the requirement of Article 3 of the Convention (prohibition of torture) and ordered the respondent Government to pay the applicant EUR 26,000 in respect of non-pecuniary damage.
