The ECHR judgment of March 5, 2019 in the case of Skudayeva v. Russia (Skudayeva v. Russia) (application No. 24014/07).

The case has successfully examined the application of a violation of the right to freedom of expression by initiating a defamation case. The case has violated the requirements of Article 10 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

In 2007, the applicant was assisted in preparing the application. Subsequently, the application was communicated to the Russian Federation.

In her application, the applicant, who was a journalist, complained that the institution of defamation proceedings against her violated her right to freedom of expression.

On 05 March 2019, following an application by the applicant, the Court unanimously ruled that in the present case the Government violated the requirements of Article 10 of the Convention (right to freedom of expression) and ordered the respondent Government to pay the applicant EUR 2,000 in respect of non-pecuniary damage.
